The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Dispatch Office currently has 7 full- and 5 part-time dispatchers. The police dispatch position requires rotating shift assignments to maintain a fully operational 24-hour facility with two dispatchers working together at all times.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
processing and evaluating information, prioritizing calls and dispatching required units and/or agencies, monitoring and coordinating police unit activities and assignments via police radio, maintaining status and location af all public safety personnel, utilizing technology such as computers, radios, telephone and 9-1-1 calls, and maintaining appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned duties.
Knowledge and Skill abilities include, but are not limited to:
knowledge of public service activity and methods of local government, knowledge of computer technology and equipment, knowledge of law enforcement terminology and procedures, knowledge of all names and location of roads and highways in the parish, skills of multitasking and observing situations to relay details accurately, ability to speak clearly and concisely, ability to think and act quickly in emergencies and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, all police departments, outside law enforcement agencies and the public.
The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Department, Patrol Division, is the most visible department throughout our parish. These officers operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They are responsible for approximately 865 square miles of land and 146 square miles of water. Approximately 24,500 people live in this parish. In most cases, the patrol deputies are the first to respond to calls for assistance, vehicle crashes, crimes being committed, or any other emergencies. They provide proactive patrols, and enforce federal, state and local laws.
The investigations unit consists of 4 detectives who thoroughly investigate all crimes reported or referred to the Sheriff’s Office. Our ultimate goal is to solve all crimes reported. We strive to arrest the perpetrators, recover stolen property, seek restitution for victims of property crimes, and prepare reports for the subsequent prosecution of the arrested parties. We also work closely with parents and our school system with ungovernable juveniles. We monitor and perform compliance checks on registered sex offenders residing in the parish. We also have the capabilities to investigate, identify and arrest those who would prey on members of our society using computers and the internet.
The Criminal Investigations Unit consists of four divisions:
1. Criminal Investigations-responsible for investigating homicides, robberies, thefts, assaults,crimes against property.
2. Juvenile Investigations-responsible for investigating crimes against or involving persons under the age of 17.
3. Sex Offender Coordinator-responsible for monitoring the registered sex offenders in the parish.
4. High Tech Crimes Unit-responsible for investigating computer related crimes, child pornography, fraud, internet scams, forgery, financial crimes as well as cellular phone related crimes and digital forensics.
Narcotics Task Force
The Mission of the Sabine Parish Narcotics Task Force is to inhibit the flow of illegal drugs in and through Sabine Parish. Sabine Parish participates with our neighboring parishes (Desoto and Red River) in a Tri-Parish Narcotics Task Force. We work closely with the F.B.I., D.E.A., and Louisiana State Police in combating illegal drugs.
For the year July 1,2012- June 27,2013 the Tri-Parish Task Force made 333 Felony arrests. Confiscated were 271.5 grams of Methamphetamine, 347.6 grams of Crack Cocaine, 1145.5 grams of Powder Cocaine, 32.9 Pounds of Marijuana, 1083 Dosage Units of Diverted Prescription Medications, 114 Dosage Units of Ecstasy/MDMA, and removed 64 Marijuana Plants. The Task Force worked four OCDETF (Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces) cases with the FBI, DEA,and LSP that resulted in seizures of $32,240. in currency, 9 vehicles with an estimated value of $33,400. and 77 weapons.
The Sabine Parish Task Force is also utilized as needed to perform various services such as school drug searches, jail searches, K-9 demonstrations, extra court room security, and sex offender compliance checks.
Water Patrol Unit
The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol consists of a three person team of Deputies from the enforcement branch that have been trained in boat operation, underwater search, rescue and recovery and enforcement of boating laws. The team operates a center console bay boat and patrols Toledo Bend which has approximately 1200 miles of shoreline and 146 square miles of waterway in Sabine Parish. We assist the La. Wildlife and Fisheries Department who is primarily responsible for operations on Toledo Bend Lake.
